On Thursday, October 22nd I attended the Columbus kickoff for 100(+) Women Who Care, the local affiliate of a national fundraising organization that strives to bring together 100+ women to raise money for area charities. Members agree to attend four meetings over the course of a year to write a $100 check to the same charity. At each one-hour meeting, representatives of selected charities give a five-minute overview of their organization’s mission and sponsored programs or projects. Following the presentations, attendees ask questions and then vote for the presenting organization they want to be the recipient of each person’s contribution. A different charity wins at each meeting by receiving the majority of votes.
At the first meeting of the Columbus Metro Chapter, the charity that won the most votes and a total of $3400 was Hilltop, a group sponsored by the Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. The Hilltop will use the funds for local families and individuals for housing and medical emergencies, and battered women relocation.
The other organizations that presented included the Young Survival Coalition (YSC ) that is dedicated to helping young women battling breast cancer. YSC works with survivors, caregivers, and the medical, research, advocacy and legislative communities to increase the quality and quantity of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and under. A representative of BalletMet presented on its dance education programs including its KidTix program that provides over 3,000 free performance tickets to children identified by Central Ohio social service agencies. These programs positively impact literacy and help students develop discipline, self-confidence and appreciation for creative diversity.
